Usage

Designed for elite winter sport stadiums and pitches, ELITE SPORT focuses on the key characteristics of wear tolerance, recovery, camera-friendly grass colour and disease resistance. ELITE SPORT is changing the game for the renovation and construction of stadium and other high-quality pitches.

Top performing varieties

Barenbrug’s ELITE SPORT product has been re-formulated for 2026 to include four of the top-6 varieties in BSPB Turfgrass Seed 2026, including the new Bargkamp for the first time.

Barzico holds the #3 position, trialled under winter sports wear simulation at 25mm height of cut. The cultivar originates from Barenbrug’s Dutch breeding station and is a very strong all-round ryegrass suitable for many applications. Visually, it is mid-fine, extremely dense with a medium green colour.

New for 2026 is the inclusion of the #4 ranked cultivar, Bargkamp. The inclusion of Bargkamp lifts the overall mixture score over last year's mixture. Bargkamp exhibits an excellent range of desirable traits, including high shoot density and recovery thanks to its strong spring growth.

Altivo, ranked #5, was launched in 2024, and possesses a broad range of beneficial traits. Early spring growth and high recovery are of particular note.

Barbasten is ranked #6. It is a true winter sports cultivar from Holland, coarser in the leaf, paler green and exceptionally active in winter/spring recovery. Barbasten brings additional Drechslera leaf spot tolerance to the product.

High wear tolerance and recovery

The mixture is formulated primarily on performance in the BSPB/STRI Turfgrass Seed 2026 booklet Table S1 for sports pitch wear simulation. ELITE SPORT boasts the UK's highest ‘mixture score’ of 7.98.

Desirable traits

ELITE SPORT combines cultivars that go beyond wear tolerance alone. Barbasten brings additional Drechslera leaf spot tolerance to the blend and Barzico combines highly-rated visual merit and wear tolerance. Altivo and Bargkamp both exhibit early spring growth – an essential trait for achieving strong recovery.
