Grass seed commands a record price in Suffolk charity auction

What might just be the most expensive 20kg bag of grass seed ever sold in the UK was purchased by a Suffolk company director recently during an auction at the T20 charity cricket match between Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club and the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) England Legends team.

The event, which Bury St Edmunds CC won with just two balls remaining, was held at The Victory Ground, a landmark sports facility in the town, to mark its Centenary, raising £22,000 the club and the NHS.

Donated by Barenbrug UK, the leading grass seed breeder and grower, which has its head office nearby, the seed was auctioned by former English cricketer Ed Giddins at a sit-down lunch held before the match attended by 230 guests.

The winning bid of £1,000, over ten times the normal price, came from by Martin Welham, Director of Welham Surfacing Ltd, a well-established Bury St Edmunds family business which specialises in high quality asphalt and macadam solutions.

It was the second time in five years that the PCA England Legends had played in the town, with around 500 people turning out to watch them in 2016. They agreed to a return match to mark the centenary of The Victory Ground as part of sponsorship from leading pub retailer and brewer Greene King. The PCA England Legends team comprised Captain Alex Tudor, together with Usman Afzaal, Mark Alleyne, Ali Brown, Matthew Hoggard, Devon Malcolm, Phil Mustard, Monty Panesar, Mark Ramprakash, Owais Shah and Ajmal Shahzad.

The event was organised and hosted by David Barker MBE, President of Bury St Edmunds CC, a well-known Suffolk farmer who received an MBE in recognition of his outstanding contribution to conservation.

Yvonne Hargreaves, Brand Marketing Manager for Barenbrug UK, adds: “As a sponsor of Bury St Edmunds CC we were delighted that the match between Bury St Edmunds CC and Green King PCA England Legends was so well supported and such a success, raising much-needed funds for these worthy causes.”
