Winter Fair Event Round-Up 2019

As we draw our breath before trading commences in 2020, this is as good a time as any to reflect on the RUAS Winter Fair 2019. Once again, Barenbrug UK was very well received by our colleagues in the trade and farmers.  With the Winter Fair falling on the same day as the General Election, schools were closed across the country to make way for polling stations and the crowd was phenomenal. Whilst many are still coming to terms with the bad weather in the back end of 2019, many farmers were singing the praises of swards re-seeded during the fantastic weather in 2018. Carrying this theme forward into 2020 was generally accepted by everyone we spoke to with plenty of discussion on grass varieties and mixture options for the incoming season. Our 2020 catalogue was well received with plenty of people taking a copy and noting mixtures that will suit their system. We were delighted to be able to talk about our new late diploid variety Callan, bred by AFBI at Loughgall and Barclamp, our new Hybrid diploid variety. It was great to be once again launching new grass varieties at the RUAS Winter Fair and we were delighted to be joined on the stand by Dr Elizabeth Magowan and Dr Debbie McConnell from AFBI to discuss the success of the grass breeding programme at Loughgall and the commercial partnership between AFBI and Barenbrug.

Our new design stand was well received and complimented on at the Winter Fair and of course, the return of Braemar Farm with their artisan ice cream was a major hit with young and old! Braemar Farm are our Grass Into Gold partner in Northern Ireland and the Winter Fair is a great chance to showcase the farming success story of husband and wife team, Ian & Ruth Pollock. Ian runs their dairy farm near Castlerock, Co. Londonderry and Ruth uses her skills to produce ice cream from the milk produced on the farm. With Barenbrug grass mixtures used at Braemar farm, this is an ideal example of delicious produce direct from grass to fork (or in this case spoon!). Ruth was on hand at the Winter Fair to give visitors to our stand a Braemar Farm ice cream compliments of Barenbrug and as always, it went down a treat.

Looking forward to 2020, I will be following up the enquiries made on the day and look forward to discussing our new mixture range for this year with farmers who called to see us on the day. I have no doubt the Winter Fair is an excellent opportunity for Barenbrug UK to say thank you to those we have done business with before and with the launch of our catalogue for the incoming year, say hello to those we will do business with in the future!
