Specialist grass seed breeder Barenbrug has unveiled its brand new Grass & Forage Seeds 2010 catalogue, which provides livestock producers with comprehensive details of mixture composition and usage. Also included for the first time is specific management advice to help maximise the potential of their leys.
The star of the catalogue is innovative new mixture Ensign Duet, which combines Crusader, Alice and Barblanca white clovers with 66 percent Lemmon red clover for rapid nitrogen fixation for new leys.
Ensign Duet is currently being tested at Barenbrug's three UK trials sites – Cropvale in Worcestershire, Aberdeen in Scotland and Loughgall in Northern Ireland – and early indications show that the mixture is delivering a tremendous increase in yield. In fact, results from the 2009 season delivered a 40 percent higher increase in yield than the company's Ensign white clover mixture – a remarkable result similar to that of red clover sown in a pure stand.
Barenbrug's agricultural product manager David Long says that these latest results illustrate the added benefits Ensign Duet can deliver to livestock producers. As he explains: "Red clovers establish and fix nitrogen better than white clovers in the first two years of a new sward, but lack the persistency of white clovers. And so by combining the two clover types this new mixture feeds the sward effectively throughout its productive life; as the red clover starts to weaken, the white has developed strongly and spread through the sward, and is hence in the ideal position to replace it."
The 32-page catalogue is also packed with information on the company's best-selling BAR Forage mixtures range. These proven mixtures are testament to Barenbrug's UK trials programme, having been identified and extensively trialled for their persistence, palatability, yield and performance at one or more of the three trials sites. Harnessing top performers such as Dunluce and Tyrella, these varieties continue to outperform all others in Barenbrug's trials and hence feature prominently in the BAR Range.
Available in England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland editions featuring products tailored to each region's climate and conditions, the catalogue also contains full details of Barenbrug's organic, equestrian, game cover crop and wild flower seed offerings, together with indispensible advice on mixture selection and management.
