amenity research - SOWING DEPTH

Sowing depth influences the speed of establishment, species composition and subsequent performance of the sward. Our mixture trial at the STRI concluded significant differences in species composition and sward density between the same mixture when sown at different depths. Mixtures containing smaller seed species such as Poa pratensis (smooth-stalked meadowgrass) and Deschampsia caespitosa (tufted hairgrass) need to be sown at the recommended shallower sowing depth to compete in establishment with more aggressive species such as Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass) and to maximise their desirable characteristics within the mixture. The results from this trial have enabled us to recommended sowing depth for each Barenbrug mixture.
