4IR1 is a cultivar of fast establishing annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) specifically bred by Barenbrug Research for its amenity turf characteristics. Available in the UK as a blend – SOS – 4IR1 has the ability to germinate at very cool soil temperatures – in trials as low as 3ºC.
Temperature germination trials have demonstrated significant differences in percentage germination between different cultivars within the same species, including perennial ryegrass. The latest trial included 4IR1 which demonstrated its capability to germinate in very cool temperatures. The refrigerated trial was at a constant 4ºC and as (Figure 1) shows 4IR1 germinated well after just 23 days.
This low temperature germination capability means that renovation windows can be greatly extended.
4IR1 has a tufted annual growth habit with a height of 350mm and mid-green colour. Its leaf width is similar to broader-leafed perennial ryegrass amenity cultivars such as Barrage. It has good disease tolerance, a rooting capability of down to 200mm and very low thatch build up. Its heading date is 8 June.
It is ideal for a variety of applications including:
transition renovation and regular divotting for racecourses
mid-season (winter) repairs for sports pitches
summer renovation of sports pitches with extremely limited establishment windows
winter reinstatement and divotting of golf course tees, fairway bottlenecks and walkways
rapid soil surface stabilisation for landscaping applications
